Every year we go to the UK’s most historic bicycle gathering… York Cycle Rally! We’re immensely proud to be a part of this volunteer led cycle rally that has been hosted in York since it’s founding nearly 75 years ago. Recycle York will be attending to showcase some of our incredible projects, help cyclist stay safe with a service stand and some goodies for them to keep their bike running smoothly!
York’s Cycle Rally was founded in 1945 to encourage collaboration between Yorkshire’s different districts. This included Hull & East Yorkshire, Sheffield, Mid-Yorkshire and Teeside, born out of a passion for cycling and providing a great weekend of fun geared around all things cycling.
This remarkable picture is from 1953 when Una and Kathleen Riley were on their way to the Cycle Rally. Even then, there was camping available and family fun including bike challenges, stalls and activities spread over a weekend.
The York Cycle Rally have a great website that they update regularly with what’s going on and taking place at the beautiful York Knavesmire.
Our plot usually plays host to the team bringing a great selection of goodies including tyres, pedals, lubricants and our speciality, recycled bikes! We work around North Yorkshire collecting bikes that people have deemed to be ‘waste.’ We recover these bikes from the household recycling centres (at a cost), service them back up to our high standards and give them a new life.
York Rally always have badges available as a sort of keep-sake and memory for the day. Below we have the 1948 badge when the rally was known as York International Cycling Rally.
You may never have heard of Cyclo-Cross, but our resident superstar showed them all at the Rallu. Noah cleaned up at the competitions claiming 3 medals!
Cyclo-cross is kind of like motor-cross, just on a racer style push-bike. A great sport that provides entertainment for all involved! Noah had a fantastic time representing Recycle York and we were so proud of him for coming away with 3 medals!

If camping is your thing, then you are well looked after. Whether you’re camping light or bringing the family, the pitches are designed to cater for everyone and parties of all sizes. As we are based in York we are lucky because we only had to drive down the road to unpack. At events like this it is always great to be out in the community and spreading the word about what we do and how we help people get back on the road, safely.
A big thank you to everyone that came to our plot and spoke with us. Bradley Mulhearn, Recycle York’s owner said, “We can’t wait to be back next year! It is such a great thing to be involved right on our doorstep!
