Africa receive bikes from York

It’s no secret that we have an abundance of bikes in our possession. These bikes are recovered from various Household Recycling Centres throughout North Yorkshire. The majority of the bikes end up in our shop on Walmgate but there are loads of bikes that we can’t sell but are still in good enough condition for communities to use in Africa.

We send a lot of bikes to communities in various countries throughout Africa. Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Namibia are just a few of the ones that we know of.

It’s important to us to continue to commit ourselves to promoting and embedding a circular economy and just because we are quite picky with the bikes that go into the shop, doesn’t mean other people can’t benefit from the surplus that we have (and frankly, can’t keep up with!)

Bikes For Africa

We’re currently loading up 500 bikes to send, these are going to be used all around the countries in villages desperate for help with transport. This is a scheme that makes us very proud to be involved with and couldn’t do it without your input. It’s mostly down to the success of the bike rescue project we run, that provides the bikes we need. Please, keep your donations coming and help us to benefit so many lives.

We plan on increasing our on going support and scaling the business to maximise the amount of bikes we can get to Africa. The things they can do with the bikes we send is just amazing. Turning old rusty, unloved bikes into daily commuters. The terrain out there is fairly rough, so the old mountain bikes are always in high demand!

These communities recycle not just bikes, but clothes, engine parts and anything that can be used again. Even when we in the west have condemned them beyond use. This way of living is life and death and the fact we can help contribute to an improvement to their quality of life, really makes you wonder what more could be done to really help everyone get out of poverty.

We will strive to support these communities and ship as many bikes as we can to a project that is, in our eyes, incredibly worthwhile. Please note, while our continuous bike rescue project is central to our operating, we do accept donations in-store so if you have an old bike lying around in the garage or shed, feel free to drop it in or give us a call and have a chat with us about it.
